HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The name Barrio Tambis was derived from the “bago tambis” tree, which was commonly found and grew abundantly in the area. Within this barrio are two sitios: Sitio Tag-baje and Sitio Katihagan. The community was established between 1909 and 1914 under the leadership of the first inhabitant and Tenyente del Barrio, Honorato P. Goles. He was followed by the second Tenyente del Barrio, Doroteo P. Monido, from 1919 to 1924.

Vicente Merto, Sr. served as the fifth Tenyente del Barrio from 1929 to 1934, followed by Ariston Goles from 1934 to 1939. During these years, a great tragedy struck as many people died due to a cholera outbreak. From 1940 to 1941, Jesus Cabilan took over as leader just as World War II began. Between 1942 and 1944, under Albino Cabilan, the residents experienced intense fear and hardship as the war intensified, forcing people to hide or evacuate (bakwit) into the mountains.

From 1945 to 1949, Captain Rufino Josoy led the community. This was a time of great joy as the country achieved victory and freedom from the Japanese, a triumph gained with the help of the Americans.

Under the leadership of Captain Pedro T. Olor (1950–1959), a powerful typhoon hit, destroying livelihoods and property due to massive flooding. This devastation caused many residents to migrate to Luzon and Mindanao.

From 1960 to 1979, Captain Antonio S. Merto, Sr. took over. During his term, Sitio Buko-buko (located in the lower area) began forming its own barrio because it was too far from the center for recreation and worship. This led to the division of the area into Tambis I and Tambis II. This period also saw the rise of NPA rebels.

In 1980, Captain Diosdado Nantes assumed leadership, succeeded by Hon. Vicente S. Merto, Jr. from 1981 to 2007. In 1982, the massive Typhoon Besing caused widespread destruction, prompting many residents to move to Manila for work. Following the 2007 local elections, Hon. Felix C. Olor was elected as the new Barangay Chairman, and the community celebrated its Centennial Founding Anniversary on May 23, 2009.
