History of the Barangay

Barangay Nueva Esperanza is the smallest barangay under the municipality of Saint Bernard. Its former name was “Cabac-an,” which means “having a lot of water in the river” (kabaka). According to the elders, during the dry season, no water could be seen in the river, but during the rainy season, the river swells dangerously. The strong current makes it impossible for anyone to cross safely.

This caused damage to crops, properties, livestock, and the livelihoods of the people. From 1954 to 1989, the barangay continued to use the name Cabac-an. Eventually, a resolution was passed to officially rename the barangay as Nueva Esperanza, which means “New Hope” or “Bag-ong Paglaum.”
