History of the Barangay

According to our historical sources with the confirmation of our folks, Barangay Mahayahay was initially came up in earlier par of the 20th century, before the WORLD WAR 2. It was first a Barangay of Cabalian, Leyte now called as San Juan.
This barangay was composed of two site; Pong-on and Hitungaw. Pong-on refer to now as Purok 1- Sampaguita, Purok 2- Dahlia, Purok 3- Sunflower, Purok 4- Cadena de Amor, Purok 5- African Daisy; and Hitungaw refer to Purok 6- Gumamela and Purok 7- Camia were overlooking Himatagon.
A portion in the south of Pong-on was not easy to pass because of its hilly area but when you’re already on its peak, a relief of fresh air and an enchanting venue can abso-lutely make you fell a comfortable and refreshed, so most people especially the Camarines or the common labourers who used to spend their leisure time in the area used to call it HAYAHAY which means REFRESHING and was popularly known by the name MAHAYAHAY.
Due to its growing number of inhabitants and the desire to have its own identify, an appeal was passed to Municipal Government to make this area be separated from Hi-matagon and thereby recognized it as one Independent Barangay.

It was on December 9, 1954 when President Ramon Magsaysay Executive Order No. 84 that converted barrio Himatagon as Municipality of Saint Bernard through the efforts of Leyte Governor Bernardo Torres, the name Barangay Mahayahay was subsequently give to this place through the efforts of Barangay Captain Juanito Pamaos and constituents with the cooperation and diligence of late Municipal Mayor Graciano H. Capili. The word MAHAYAHAY was coined from the areas description as MAHANGIN and HAYAHAY and this name has been used to call this Barangay since then.

Geographical Lotion

Barangay Mahayahay is a typical Barangay with regards to its population, area and setting. Along the National Highway, is the first Barangay from the Poblacion of Saint Bernard going to Maasin, It is bounded: North-Barangay Tabontabon; East- Poblacion of Saint Bernard; South- Barangay San Isidro and West- Barangay Bolodbolod. It is 1 km. or more or less away from Poblacion; 5 km from San Juan, the nearest Town from Saint Bernard; 124 km. away from Maasin, the Provincial Capital, and is traversed by the National Highway. It has a total land area of 332.12 hectares, 66% are Agricultural land or 219.20 hectares, 11% are forest and 23% are devoted to residential uses or 76.39 hectares.
