History of the Barangay

In 1946, Barangay Mahayag was still a sitio of Barangay Tabon-tabon known as Ilaya. There were six (6) families living in that sitio. Their names were Tanasio Pagpaguitan, Mamerto Ranessa, Antonio Mundia, Alvino Bolanio, Eliseo Quiawan, and Bonifacio Quiawan.

In 1966, a conflict occurred involving the president and vice president of the Roman Catholic religion. Because of this, they decided to build a chapel in 1967 in Sitio Ilaya. By 1968, there were already 17 households living in the sitio. These residents were Jose Cabodbod, Mamerto Ranesses, Antonio Mundia, Alvino Bolanio, Eliseo Quiawan, Bonifacio Quiawan, Alfonso Basa, Mamerto Trazo, Luciano Pagpaguitan, Narciso Pagpaguitan, Domingo Pagpaguitan, Emiliano Dayo, Isaac Bolanio, Valentine Bolanio, Silverio Estrella, and Ruperto Libato Sr.

On September 14, 1968, Sitio Ilaya was declared as Barangay Mahayag. The name was derived when farmers discovered an area that had previously been covered by large trees. Upon returning from their farms, they saw that the trees protecting the residents had been cut down. They remarked that the place had become bright (“mahayag”), and from then on, the area was called Mahayag.
