History of the Barangay

In 1904, this place was said to be inhabited by the people originally coming from Bohol Island whose purpose is to look for a greener pasture by war of cultivating the land which they know that is a rich soil and a very fertile one.

The first inhabitant namely Santiago Alagon, Bonifacio Bungcag, Donata Bungcag, Juliana Bungcag, Escolastica Bungcag, Pablo Luego, Dionesio Luego, Carlos Corbeta, Maximo Quiban, Procopio Alfaro and Anatolio Soria.

Prior naming this Barangay, the people mentioned above, conducted a meeting whose main Agenda is to establish a “Balangay “or Barangay. Mr. Raymundo Bungcag suggested to name the Balangay as Magbagacay considering that in their place in Bohol there were named “ Magbagacay “ and he further explained that this place has so many “ Bagacay “ (one kind of bamboo) has contributed most in their mean of livelihood which is weaving particularly making basket as well as fishing gears. Indeed, the group decided to name the Balangay as “MAGBAGACAY “.

Presently, Barangay Magbagacay is located along the coastal part of Saint Bernard, Province of Southern Leyte which is 1.2 kilometers away from Poblacion area towards the direction of the Municipality of San Juan, Southern Leyte, and Adjacent town of Saint Bernard.

The main source of livelihood is from Agricultural such as palay, banana, coconut, it also includes livestock raising as well as fishing.
