History of the Barangay
In earlier times, this place was called “Indangan,” in honor of the fish caught here, which were of different sizes. Later, it was renamed “Guindag-an,” a name given by the Christian armies who won a battle against Muslim forces led by the giant Hilig.
In 1947–1948, Grade V and VI Boy Scouts Troop #37 became champions at the Scouting Rally held in Anahawan, Southern Leyte, under the leadership of Scout Master Aniano Poliquit. Because Troop #37 won the championship, the place was renamed Hindag-an.
Location of Hindag-an
Barangay Hindag-an is located about 7 kilometers from the town proper of Saint Bernard. It is one of the six coastal barangays and is the fourth largest among the 30 barangays of Saint Bernard.
Boundaries:
- North: Barangay Himbangan
- East: Coastal waters
- South: Barangay Lipanto
- West: Mountain ranges extending to Ilag, Liloan
Land Area
The barangay has a total land area of 690.13 hectares, with a perimeter area of 621.54 hectares.
Breakdown of land use:
- Nursery area: 381.51 hectares
- Coconut land (cocoland): 278.32 hectares
- Residential area (Barangay Proper): 30.30 hectares
Hindag-an is divided into seven (7) puroks:
- Purok 1 – Lanzones
- Purok 2 – Santol
- Purok 3 – Mangga
- Purok 4 – Tambis
- Purok 5 – Nangka
- Purok 6 – Makopa
- Purok 7 – Sunkist
