PROFILE OF BARANGAY HIMOS-ONAN

Long ago, the place became a resting area for wild pigs. The pigs came from different places to stay and rest there. Eventually, hunters discovered the area and made it their usual hunting ground. Every time they caught a wild pig, they would slaughter it near the river on the eastern side. When they opened the pig’s belly to remove and clean its intestines, the act of opening the pig’s belly was called “hug-an” or “himos-on” in the old days. Because they would clean the pigs by the river, the river became known as “Himos-onan.”

HISTORY OF BARANGAY

This is where the naming of the place Himos-onan began. Barangay Himos-onan was established in 1958. Its boundaries are Barangay Lombog, Hinunangan to the north; Barangay Maria Asuncion, Saint Bernard to the south; Barangay Libas, Hinunangan to the east; and Barangay Catmon and Barangay Bantawon, Saint Bernard to the west.

  • 1964: The Catholic chapel was built through the efforts of Sulpicio Baldera.

  • 1969: The primary school was established.

  • 1982: The barangay was hit by a strong typhoon (Besing); most residents lost their livelihoods.

  • 1982–1985: Residents were scattered and displaced due to fear caused by the armed conflict between government soldiers and the NPA (New People’s Army), resulting in many lost lives.

  • 1984: Electricity was installed for several residents in the village.

  • 1991: The barangay suffered another tragedy—an earthquake. Residents lived outside their homes and struggled to cook food.

  • 1991: In the same year, the village became popular due to the story of a child allegedly possessed by the Holy Spirit. This event drew crowds from various other barangays to see the child. Since then, many people began attending church and praying to God.

  • 1999: The first elementary school was established.
